A couple of bills of importance have had activity this week and we wanted to take a moment to update you! We hope you’ll join us in taking action and celebrating, as well!
HB2027, also known as the UAGA bill, passed in the House this week (144-0), and is now on the way to the Senate! Call your Senators to support HB2027! YAY!
SB1803, also known as the registry bill, is scheduled for public hearing next week, Tuesday, April 28. You may think…Why do we need this registry bill? Doesn’t Texas already have a Donor Registry? Yes, however, since the Registry’s inception in 2006, less than 300,000 Texans have registered. Many states with registries have more than a million people signed up and a handful have several million. We know Texans are just as giving and compassionate (or more so) than other states, but we’re lagging behind when it comes to registering donors. This bill will improve the registration process so that more Texans will register to be organ donors. These improvements include: eliminating the two-signature validation step, changing the language from “may” to “shall” concerning DPS training and limiting the request to one question (“Would you like to register to be an organ donor?”) Call your Senators today to vote yes in support of SB1803!
